In the movie “BLADERUNNER” with Harrison Ford, why are the replicants considered “retired” when they die? Also, what is the significance of the Unicorn towards the end of the movie?
Because they are not human they call them “retired” when Ford destroys them, it makes them less associated with actual humans and therefore easier to kill. The unicorn can have a lot of meanings, it could represent Rachael and that Deckard (Ford) will never get to keep her because she will be hunted by either another bladerunner or she will expire (she will just stop working) very soon. It also could represent (this is the one I like the best) that Deckard himself is a replicant, there was a scene where he dreams of a unicorn, Gaff (who makes the origami) would only know Deckard dreams of unicorns if Deckard is a replicant since their dreams are implanted into them. The director has stated that yes Deckard is a replicant and it’s implied in the film, but there is still much debate on it. So I guess you can decide for yourself if the unicorn represents Deckard or Rachael.
